Teaching our children to be confident in themselves is one of the most important things we can do as parents. When they believe in themselves, they are less likely to be bullied, more likely to get good grades, have a better shot at landing the job they want, and will have more friends. There are several ways to help instill confidence in our children, and we work hard to do that on and off the mat at Championship Martial Arts.
Speaking Up
One of the first steps to appearing confident is learning to speak up. We help children find their voice by encouraging them to introduce themselves clearly when they are performing. They learn to look others in the eye when they are speaking, and to communicate with their partners when doing partner work. As children learn to speak up and are heard, they find confidence in themselves and grow to be more assertive.
Standing Tall
When our students are performing their karate forms, they are encouraged to have good posture, to stand tall and keep their head up, to look their instructors in the eye, and hold themselves with an air of confidence. As they practice this, we begin to see a change in them. They start walking in the building with their heads held high. When we teach self defense, we teach them that the first step in self defense is to walk confidently without your face glued to a phone so you do not appear like a victim.
Believe in Yourself
I’m sure we have all had moments of self doubt, and moments when we felt amazingly confident. And I’m certain we have noticed the difference. As we teach our children to believe in themselves, we will see them perform better in school. As they perform better in school, their confidence will increase. It’s a beautiful circle that helps them become amazing adults.
If you are looking for ways to help your kids gain confidence, consider enrolling them in karate. You will see them blossom into incredible little humans.
